The Effects of Sin

The corruption of humanity by original sin causes all humanity to enter the world with a bent towards sin to a point of being incapable of doing good. We are born not only with an inability to do good but with a propensity towards sin and iniquity that we have inherited (Psalm 51:5, Romans 3:9-18, Ephesians 2:3).

The human now faces physical, spiritual, psychological, and relational death. Not only will we die physically but there is a slow decay of aging and a body that goes through decay. Most severe is the spiritual death we experience in separation from God (Ephesians 2:12, 19; 4:18; Colossians 1:21 cf. Isaiah 59:2, Romans 6:23, 1 John 3:4). In psychological death humankind is increasingly plagues by mental illness and a brokenness of minds that lead us away from God; lastly our relationships with one another as we sin against one another and are no longer capable of the community we were created for (Zechariah 8:17, the command to love one another is extensive throughout scripture and indicates the separation in community: John 13:34-35; 15:12, 17; Romans 12:10, 13:8; 2 Corinthians 13:11, Galatians 5:13, Ephesians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 4:9; 2 Thessalonians 1:3, Hebrews 10:24, 1 Peter 1:22, 4:8, 5:14; 1 John 3:11, 23; 4:7, 11, 12; 2 John 5). Extended beyond this is a curse explicitly laid out by God which declares a hardship for women in childbearing, for men in work and for both in their marriage (Genesis 3:14-19, cf. Genesis 5:29, Psalm 90:7-9, 127:2, Ecclesiastes 2:22, Isaiah 24:5, Romans 8:20-22).
