What is the Holy Spirit? Or Who?
Pneuma and the Hebrew correspondent Ruach both have the same sense of “breath.” The lifeforce of God which empowers others to accomplish the will of God. Sometimes called the comforter or guide of God.
He came to dwell in all believers on the day of Pentecost. He regenerates their souls unto salvation, seals them in faith and enlightens them to understand scripture, and grants them gifts for the glorification of God and the unifying of the church body.
THE CALVINIST/ ARMINIAN DEBATE on Ordo Salutis
Calvinists believe that man is completely depraved and would never choose God or salvation of their own accord, therefore God must regenerate their souls FIRST in order for them to come to saving faith leading to justification. Arminians believe that the result of faith and justification is the renewal of the soul. They believe that we do choose to believe in Jesus and this choice leads to our justification before God and to the regeneration of our souls after faith is evident. Others, attempting to strike a middle ground, say that Faith comes first as part of God's calling but our souls must be regenerated by the Holy Spirit before God can call us Justified.
To the discerning, my presentation makes my position known. But I do not believe Ordo Salutis to be an issue of core doctrine but the belief that the HOLY SPIRIT regenerates our souls is core doctrine.
John 3:5-8 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Titus 3:5-6 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
2 Cor 1:21-22 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
1 Corinthians 2:8-10 None of the rulers of this age understood this… these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
